IELTS/OET – What is the difference and why do you need them?

If you are planning to work or study in Ireland, you may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency. The two most commonly accepted exams are the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and the OET (Occupational English Test).

Both exams are internationally recognised and required for registration and professional practice in Ireland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

What Is IELTS?

The IELTS exam assesses general English proficiency for candidates planning to work, study, or migrate to an English-speaking country.

It evaluates your ability to:

  • Write structured essays

  • Understand lectures and academic content

  • Discuss a wide range of topics

  • Read and interpret academic articles

Types of IELTS

There are two versions:

  • IELTS Academic(recommended for healthcare professionals)

  • IELTS General Training

  • Reading: 60 minutes

  • Writing: 60 minutes

  • Listening: 30 minutes

What Is OET?
